This is a sweet video highlighting 2 different cosplayers and the much nicer and positive aspects of cosplaying and the cosplay community.
I think many people from various fandoms can relate to how a support group can help them break out of their own shell.
I’m pretty open about being a a super shy crybaby with epic social anxiety growing up and through not just cosplay, but geek and pop culture communities, I was able to gain confidence and feel comfortable with myself.
I’m not a shy as I used to be (i used to cry when people other than my family talked to me). I’m actually quiet aggressive now, opinionated, and talkative around my peers.
For those out there who still think that cosplay or “fandoms” are some how a cesspool of societies weird deviants, I feel sorry for them. They are trapped with in the predetermined rules and restrictions of their current social structure that they can’t get their head around the fact that just because something is not accepted doesn’t mean it’s not true or unhelpful.
People used to think the world was flat and that the sun revolved around the Earth… and that swimming meant you were a witch.
Living in a big city, when I go into the douchey parts of LA and Hollywood, I expect that there will be assholes who think my hair and my fashion is an invitation to talk/cat-call/holler/engage in small talk with me. It is not.
However, I’m pretty used to it, I’m very aggressive about shutting it down and HOW to shut it down depending on which part of town I am. If it’s DTLA it’s usually a homeless guy, if it’s Hollywood it’s either tourists or some insecure dbag trying to up his “masculinity”
However, last night was weird. My best friend and I had driven home from Hollywood to West LA**
We stop at the Taco truck that is usually parked in the vicinity of my neighborhood, which is a nice yuppie/upper middle class neighborhood.
Michelle got her tacos, and I had the first weird encounter with a guy trying to hit on us (because we have coloured hair, so we must party hard apparently) and he asks us the usual: where are we from, where did we come from, was it a party)
This was the 3rd of 3 incidents of being hollered at last night, and by far the oddest.
As Michelle and I were walking back to her car, not even 100ft from the truck, 3 other male patrons, I assume in their early 20s come up to me. One of them asks me the usual..my name, where I came from, was it a party… I try to brush him off nicely and get to the car door. Don’t give him my name, say we were out, we’re going home.
THEN he says to me, hey we live 3 blocks down ..ADDRESS HERE.. can you ladies give us a ride? Please?
And my first mental reaction is: What did he just ask me?
But he continues, saying it’s not far, and not inconvenient.
So I say “no dude.” In the bro-iest way I can.
He says “but why? it’s close!”
I say loudly: YOU ARE A TOTAL STRANGER DUDE!
and he looks at me and his friends and they literally say to me: WOW you are so selfish!
I am not mad, I couldn’t even react after they called me selfish.
Michelle and I laughed in the car about it for a few minutes, made semi-jokes about how we don’t give strangers a ride because we don’t want to get raped and murdered by 3 dudes 10 years younger than both of us.
I figured maybe they were drunk at 12AM on a Tuesday night. From the look of it, they were 3 university students, probably UCLA.
But in reality, I think about this: regardless of gender, that is a really really irresponsible and carefree attitude to have about your personal safety! YOU NAIVE YOUNG CHILDREN!
If those 3 guys had been college girls, and Michelle and I (who are both over 30) were dudes, it would have seen like the beginning segment of unsolved murder rape mysteries or something you see on tv. The scenario seems super sketchy when it’s 2 older dudes giving 3 young girls a ride right? Who in their right mind would ask that?
Why would anyone EVER put their life and/or safety in strangers hands?
I know that there are nice and good people out there, but getting into a car with a stranger is pretty freaking dangerous!!
You’re a college student, pretty sure you should have learned about stranger danger when you were 4!
**WEST Los Angeles**
For those of you unfamiliar with West LA proper, it is a predominantly uppermiddle class and upper class area. Most of the people who live in my area are yuppies, young upper middle class families, young upper middle class couples with pets (ME), or UCLA university students, and student housing.
It is South of Brentwood (where the Kardashians store is btw) and West of Bel-Air, as in The Fresh Prince, a little south of Malibu. We have pretty low crime and private schools and public schools which are magnet schools (aka UCLA feeder schools, where some celebrities send their kids). The average is 2-4 cars get broken into a month in my ZIPCODE (not neighborhood, zipcode). You can check the WLA PD website for stats. It’s really rare that I ever get hollered at (this was the first actually). You can tell this is a relatively “safe” area by how many people voluntarily bike, WALK and take public transport… because we’re yuppies who care a lot about the environment.
Today’s the day. The day you help save the internet from being ruined.
(Long story short: The FCC is about to make a critical decision as to whether or not internet service providers have to treat all traffic equally. If they choose wrong, then the internet where anyone can start a website for any reason at all, the internet that’s been so momentous, funny, weird, and surprising—that internet could cease to exist. Here’s your chance to preserve a beautiful thing.)
DO IT AMERICANS. IT REALLY MATTERS IF YOU’RE ON THE INTERNET READING THIS.
